Karl Marx

Born: 1818 | Died: 1883

Political Philosopher

Marx was born into a Jewish family in Trier in western Germany. He studied philosophy in Bonn and Berlin, and worked as a journalist in Brussels, Paris, and London.

Karl Heinrich Marx was a philosopher, revolutionary and political thinker, and chief theorist of modern socialism and communism. He became known for his radical views. His quarrelsome personality led to a life marked by expulsion, disappointment, and financial struggle for him and his family. In Paris in 1944, he formed a life-long association with Friedrich Engels. The two collaborated on “The Communist Manifesto,” which states the aims of Communism and endorsed fundamental political and economic changes in favor of the working class.

Marx later published the monumental work “Das Kapital” after eighteen years of preparation, which, along with other of his writings, formed the body of thought and belief known as Marxism. “Das Kapital” became the foundation of international socialism and the movements’ most important book.

His theories were of immense political influence, and many consider him the founder of economic history and sociology.
